CLOT and Nike share a vision of bridging the gap between different cultures and creating products that reflect their heritage and innovation. CLOT, which stands for Creativity Lives On Tomorrow, was founded in 2003 by Edison Chen and Kevin Poon as a lifestyle brand that aims to inspire the youth of Asia and beyond.

    Nike Cortez The origin story

The Nike Cortez was designed back in 1972 by Nike’s co-founder Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight as one of the brand’s first shoes when the brand still operated under the name Blue Ribbon. They were made in collaboration with Japanese brand Onitsuka, and were built to be light and comfortable long-distance running shoes. The shoes were packed with never-seen-before thick foam midsoles which have now been updated to EVA foam, which provided more cushioning and support for athletes.

How it got its name was when Onitsuka sent over a shoe prototype in 1967 to Bowerman and Knight, and asked for suggestions for a name. The 1968 Olympic Games was scheduled to be held at Mexico, and Bowerman initially came up with the name “The Aztec” in commemoration of the event. However, Adidas had threatened to sue if the name was not changed as they had already released a shoe called the Azteca Gold. The duo then changed its name to “Cortez” after Hernán Cortés who conquered the Aztecs, an apt representation of what is to come as Nike took the world by storm with the Nike Cortez.

Edison Chen is known for many things: acting, rapping, entrepreneur, ship and fashion designer. In footwear circles, he’s more well known for the latter, with his CLOT imprint delivering some of this century’s most memorable sneaker collaborations. 20 years into his label, Chen hasn’t slowed up, with his recent “Clotez” design the latest in a string of recent releases. The consistent stream will continue deep into 2023, with confiormation of a three-pronged collaboration involving Edison.

the Clot x Fragment x Nike Dunk Low features a tearaway silk upper in White with Black leather eyestays and lining atop a translucent outsole. “FRGMT” branding is embroidered on the heels, while co-branded Clot and Fragment logos are stamped onto the insoles. The shoe will also come housed in special packaging.

    about CLOT x Nike

Since 2006, Nike has been launching a series of sneaker collaborations with CLOT, the brainchild of Edison Chen and Kevin Poon. Through their bold and highly creative designs, CLOT has demonstrated their deep exploration and thinking into the origins of their own culture. At the same time, Nike has continued to show their respect and support towards different cultures of the world. The collaboration of these two brands has led to the bridging of sneaker cultures of the East and West.

    1.The First Kiss

A collaborative relationship sealed with a kiss, somewhat. The Air Max 1 ‘Kiss of Death’ was Nike and CLOT’s debut sneaker project, drawing inspiration from Chinese acupuncture. Releasing in 2006.

Celebrating that storied sneaker, CLOT and Nike would tap into the design once again seven years later. Incorporating the then-groundbreaking Hyperfuse technology to the Air Max 1, the ‘Kiss of Death 2’ came through with a renewed colour palette, as well as improved ventilation and functionality.

    2.Down the Silk Road

CLOT have established themselves as the undisputed kings of the tear-away sneaker, building a storied lineup of silk-clad Air Force 1s dating all the way back to 2009.

Celebrating the Air Force 1’s 35th year, CLOT finessed another silk-inspired design, arriving with an all-white colourway. Releasing almost a decade after the ‘1World’ colourway, the ‘White Silk’ brought the concept back for Nike’s ‘100’ initiative, with the upper tearing away to reveal a hidden gold layer.

Since then, CLOT have remixed the Air Force 1 in ‘Royal University Blue Silk’, ‘Rose Gold Silk’, and even tapped Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Fragment Design label for a three-way ‘Black Silk’ project in 2019.

    3.Jumpman Connection

Jordan Brand and CLOT released their first drop in 2018, taking to the Air Jordan 13 Low. Paying homage to one of China’s most important cultural relics – the Terracotta Warriors of the First Emperor of China – the detailed build re-tools the traditional stitching and padding, and also comes with lush premium suede. Designed to mimic the 2000-year-old plated armour worn by the Terracotta Army, the upper is also accented with metallic gold CLOT and Jumpman logos, carrying on the brand’s maximalist charm.

To this day, CLOT’s partnership with the Jumpman has been a vehicle to highlight some of the more underrated models, including the Air Jordan 1 Mid, Air Jordan 14 Low, and even the performance-packed Air Jordan 35.

    4.An Unexpected CLOT Twist

To mark 15 years of CLOT and Nike, the duo revived the ‘Kiss of Death’ for 2021. First teased by DJ Khaled, the rumours were officially confirmed weeks later, with the new Air Max 1 arriving with some subtle tweaks to the OG. Coming through with a similar translucent outsole to the 2006 version, the contemporary remix made use of an icy blue outsole with a graphic of a reflexology map of the sole’s pressure points hidden beneath it.

    5.’Flux’ It!

In 2022, it was time for CLOT to take on a silhouette stomping all over the zeitgeist: the Nike Dunk. Infused with lenticular design technology, the trippy, space-age Dunk High ‘Flux’ was reportedly the hardest of Edison Chen’s prodigious sneaker career so far. Inspired by the concept of yin and yang, the ‘Flux’ tapped the energy of fluidity and harmony.

‘The original concept was infusing a Yin and Yang philosophy of black and white. It’s predominantly silver, but actually, the ends of the spectrum are white and black, and the mixture of those in the middle is what causes this chrome-like silver effect on the shoe,’ says Chen

What does SB mean in Nike SB Dunk Low?

Nike Skateboarding, primarily known as Nike SB, is the Nike brand for its line of shoes, clothing, and equipment for skateboarding.

Why are SB dunks so popular?

By the mid-’90s, the Nike Dunk had become a cult favorite amongst the skateboarding community, thanks to its superior cushioning, support and traction

Are dunks or SB dunks more comfortable?

Are Dunks Or SB Dunks More Comfortable? An older SB Dunk can be more comfortable than a regular (non-SB) Dunk. Modern Dunk and SB Dunk releases tend to be stiffer right out of the box. As such, modern regular Dunks are more accommodating than their SB counterparts

Dunk vs SB Dunk: What’s the Difference Between the Sneakers?

The most noticeable difference between the two sneakers are their tongues. On the Nike Dunk, you get a slim, mesh tongue. On the SB Dunk, the tongue has been beefed up to provide more cushion and protection. By being thicker, the tongue helps with the fit as well. It enables the sneaker to mold to your feet, preventing any slipping or wiggling. The tongue is held down with elastic straps which provide an added layer of lockdown. As a bonus, it allows you to slip the SB Dunk on and off without having to mess with finicky laces.
