Nike Basketball is currently undergoing a transition period as it has begun to shift its focus away from legacy players like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. While these athletes still draw plenty of eyes and dollars to The Swoosh, their time on the court is approaching. On the roster, players like Ja Morant and Giannis Antetokounmpo will likely become the primary talent after the legends mentioned above gracefully exit their careers. While Ja’s future is somewhat in question before launching his first signature sneaker, Antetokounmpo is still going strong both on-and-off the NBA court thanks to his clean-cut image and playoff-bound Milwaukee Bucks. Before the NBA Playoffs kick off, we’ve got first looks at Giannis’ fifth signature sneaker – the Nike Zoom Freak 5.
The Nike Zoom Freak 5 is quite a sizable departure from its predecessors in terms of design, forgoing the backwards Swoosh that’s dressed almost every model. Instead, a Swoosh double its size is in its place, sitting just between the upper and midsole. The silhouette appears to be much more streamlined in its construction, forgoing the visible signature Air Unit on the sole. The first shoe appears to arrive in a gym red and metallic gold colorway. The shoe’s heel, tongue, and center of the upper is covered in a deep green, while the shoe sits atop a tri-color outsole to round off the design.the sole unit, too, is similarly simple, forgoing the visible Air Unit signature to the Zoom Freak 4.

Led by Nike Basketball Senior Design Director Ross Klein, the model’s design was approached with one core mission: to maximize the effectiveness of Antetokounmpo’s Euro-step.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has had a remarkable career, catching the eyes of fans, basketball teams, and even Nike since even before he gained his MVP status. He signed his first deal with Nike in late 2017, and he met with Nike repeatedly to help design his signature footwear and create the first shoe in his signature series.
